The Unit of Pediatric Hematology Oncology was established as the only pediatric cancer and blood disorder treatment and teaching center in the Amhara region in January 2019. It serves a catchment area of more than 12 million people. The Unit was established by our first Pediatric Hematologist Oncologist, who has got fellowship training from India. After returning from training, Dr. Mulugeta Ayalew has worked hard to reorganize the already existing pediatric oncology ward. He and his team have worked hard to strengthen the clinical and academic activities of the Unit. Since its establishment, the pediatric hemato-oncology Unit has served as the only pediatric cancer treatment center in the entire Amhara region. Upon his return from India, Dr. Mulugeta started recruiting and training nurses and support staff for the region’s first pediatric hematology oncology unit. By 2022, the benefits were apparent. The milestones include the University’s first pediatric hematology oncology fellowship. The fellowship program is a joint collaborative program between the University of Gondar and the Aslan project, a US-based organization. The pediatric hematology oncology unit is the site for a clinical extension for medical students, postgraduate pediatric residents, and undergraduate students from other schools. It’s also the site of clinical attachment for pediatric residents from Bahirdar University.
