Pharmacology is biomedical science that deals on the interaction of drugs with living tissue in order to develop and optimize their use in treating, curing, mitigating and diagnosing a disease and even in modifying physiologic function. Currently the department is actively engaged in teaching, research and community service activities.
Clinical pharmacy is the branch of pharmacy in which pharmacists provide patient care that optimizes the use of medication and promotes health, wellness, and disease prevention. Clinical pharmacists care for patients in all health care settings but the clinical pharmacy movement initially began inside hospitals and clinics. Clinical pharmacists often work in collaboration with physicians, nurse practitioners, and other healthcare professionals.
Pharmaceutics is the study of relationships between drug formulation, delivery, disposition and clinical response. At the University of Gondar, it encompass a Integrated Physical pharmaceutics as a basic, Detailed dispensing studies with a depth manufacturing technical knowledge, Biopharmaceutics and disease-related factors that regulate or perturb those processes, as well as the fundamental mathematical relationships between enzyme/transporter function, blood concentration-time profiles and the spectrum of pharmacological effects. Our instructional and research programs emphasize a Physiologically-Based Approach to understanding and predicting Drug Delivery and Disposition.
Pharmaceutical chemistry categorized in to two streams. I.e Pharmaceutical analysis whichdeals with the qualitative and quantitative analysis of drugs in raw materials and finished drug products. It tries to answer the following question and Medicinal chemistry which deals with computational, biochemical and cell-based screening technologies to identify natural and synthetic compounds with pharmacological activity and structure-activity relationships to understand the mechanisms of drug action.
Pharmacognosy derives from two Greek words, “pharmakon” or drug, and “gnosis” or knowledge. Thus, Pharmacognosy (chemistry and biology of natural products) is the study of bioactive natural substances found in terrestrial and marine organisms (plants, animals, or microbes). The Department was established as the Department of Pharmacognosy in 2004, when the School of Pharmacy is established. The department provides Chemistry of Natural products, Pharmacognosy, Complementary and Alternative Medicine and other pharmacy practice courses to undergraduate pharmacy students
The pharmaceutical services are delivered by 65 Pharmacy professionals (2 pharmacologists, 3 clinical pharmacists, 45 Pharmacists and 15 Pharmacy technicians) for about 46 wards, for different hospital laboratory departments with two store and nine dispensaries.
Currently, we have the following laboratories and facilities
- PG lab.
- Pharmacognosy and pharmaceutical chemistry laboratory
- Pharmaceutics laboratory
- Animal house
- Extemporaneous compounding unit
- Small medicinal plant garden
